23rd Annual Anesthesia Update
February 14-19 2010, Big Sky, Montana
Statement of Need
Anesthesiology is a medical specialty which requires that physicians maintain license certification. ACGME Maintenance of Certification core competencies for quality patient care include:
• Patient Care
• Medical Knowledge
• Interpersonal and Communication Skills
• Professionalism
• Systems-based Practice
• Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
Anesthesiologists are required to complete 250 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 accredited education towards maintenance of certification. This conference contributes to this requirement.
Consistent with the national focus on healthcare quality,
Anesthesiologists and Nurse Anesthetists are tasked with
implementing the most comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence-
based information on the administration of anesthesia
to patients undergoing a variety of procedures.
These clinical updates will be provided to the 23rd Annual
Anesthesia Update participants.
Target Audience
This course is designed to meet the educational needs of
an international audience of anesthesiologists and nurse
anesthetists.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
• Assess volume status and cardiac function using echocardiography and metabolic analysis for optimal management of patients undergoing anesthesia.
• Evaluate patients at risk for difficult intubation or ventilation and utilize fiber optic bronchoscopes and videolaryngoscopes for shortened duration of endotracheal
intubation.
• Utilize lower tidal volumes and both pressure and volume modes of ventilation intraoperatively to avoid aggravating lung injury in patients with sepsis and acute lung injury undergoing anesthesia.
• Assess the risk associated with common and uncommon anesthesia events in the non-OR setting.
• Evaluate patients at high risk for adverse events due to anesthetic agents and select best pharmacologic therapies based on genetic predisposition and risk factors including obstructive sleep apnea.
• Employ a multimodal pain management strategy for patients chronically using opioids.
• Apply a multidisciplinary approach to patients with complex regional pain syndromes, including the use of new pharmaceutical agents.
• Apply techniques for prevention of post-operative neurotoxicity and cognitive dysfunction and management of post-operative dementia.
• Employ technology shown to improve safety and enhance the anesthesiologist’s ability to provide quality medical care.
• Utilize adequate analgesia throughout labor using appropriate concentrations of epidurally administered local anesthetic and adjunctive agents.
• Evaluate pediatric patients based on identified risk factors, and utilize appropriate technologies to provide optimal care.
• Apply current ACC/AHA guidelines for cardiovascular risk stratification for patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery.
